Blog parent permission forms

There should be some parent permission slips being sent home this week and next week for all students.

The form is asking permission to post images of student artwork on this blog or Mrs. Thomas's blog as well as images of your student working on projects in class.

Please complete the form and send it back to school so we can have them on file and can begin properly documenting/taking pictures of all the awesome art projects in the coming weeks!

Thank you!

Last Week

We are off to a great start this year! I had such a wonderful time last week meeting and getting to know the students that will come into my art room. I also enjoy being on car duty (minus the rain) because its great to greet the students in the morning and to send them off to a great evening.

Grades 1-4 worked on circle maps last week, which is a type of thinking map. This is something Dr. Critchlow wants all teachers implementing this year because thinking maps help students visualize and organize information. The circle map has the topic in the center circle and information about the topic in the outer circle. Surrounding the circle should be your sources, or for our project what influences you.

The students drew themselves in the center circle and instead of using words to tell me about themselves or things they like they drew pictures with colored pencils. I gave them free range to draw at their own level with very little assistance because I wanted to see where everyone's skills are as far as drawing goes. I was quite impressed!

The students had an oppurtunity to present and share their circle maps with the class so we could learn about each other and practice verbalizing what we were trying to express in art. I hope to hang up a few circle maps in the hall before sending them home.

Kindergarteners worked mostly procedures and listening to directions, but we also practiced coloring some sheets. I wanted them to get a feel for how long they would be in the art room and showed/encouraged them to draw slowly, carefully, and to put in their best effort. This week we will probably get a little more into line, shape, and color.

Art In-Service Day and Parent Night

Yesterday was a very busy day!

All of the art teachers in the county met up at Antioch High School for some training sessions and then we were bussed out to the Frist and Cheekwood to see that Chihuly exhibits. I had not seen the exhibits, which is shame as an art teacher (but its hard when you work 7 days a week all summer!), so I was so glad to have an opportunity to view them!

I was blown away by the sheer size of the exhibits and the intense coloration of the glass. I have always loved glass, in fact one of the things passed on to be from my grandmother was her glass collection (and her fun hats!). The art of glass blowing as always fascinated me, and although it seems intimidating with the heat and fragile nature of glass, I would love to take a class on it some day.

The Cheekwood exhibit was especially powerful because the artist has quite a connection to nature and to see his work mixed into to the gardens was truly breath taking. I wish I would of brought my camera yesterday, I will know better next time! So if you haven't seen the exhibits, I would highly recommend going to the Frist, the exhibit will be there through October, and free family day is Sunday August 22nd!

After our very hot tour and trip back to Antioch, it was time to get ready for parent night! There was quite a turnout! As a new teacher at Hickman I was delighted to see so many parents and families here to meet the staff! I am especially pleased with the hand full of parents that stopped by the art room to meet the new art teacher :) And it was great to meet a few students ahead of time since I will have about 250 student names to learn in the next week!

I am looking forward to a truly wonderful year here!

Greetings!

I am Hickman's new second full time art teacher, Miss Fravel :)

This will be my first year at Hickman. I grew up in Maryland and spent the last 6 years in Jacksonville, Florida. I received a degree in art education from the University of North Florida. I fell in love with Nashville and moved up here last August. I began substitute teaching in Davidson county last fall to learn as much about the school system here while receiving my Tennessee Teachers License.

I feel very fortunate to have been offered a job here at Hickman! I am looking forward to working with the staff and students this upcoming school year.

This will be my art classroom blog, I intend to use it to post pictures of student art work (with permission of course) and to let parents, staff, and students know what is going on in the art room!
